Talking Technical… WP/MVP Ratings on the Prois Galleann Rain System

We are more than pleased to announce that our warehouse is chock full of our new Galleann Rain system!  This particular system was 1 1/2 years in the development and we are quite proud of the end result!   Our goal was to produce a rain system that was ultra light and packable for rugged back country excursions. Our Galleann Jacket and pants each pack into their own pockets for easy stowing and packing.  The jacket is equipped with a 2 way adjustable hood and waterproof zippered pockets.  The pants include full leg length waterproof zippers and a removable cordura gator that attaches to your boot strings.  While the functions are amazing on these items, it is the fabric that we love.  The Galleann system is engineered with a 20,000/10,000 waterproof breathable fabric and taped seams, providing you a lightweight garment with a high waterproof and breathability rating.
20,000/10,000… What does the rating actually mean?

Manufacturers typically describe the waterproof breathability of fabrics using two numbers. The first is in millimeters (mm) and is a measure of how waterproof a fabric is. In the case of a 10k or 10,000 mm fabric, if you put a square tube with inner dimensions of 1” x 1” over a piece of said fabric, you could fill it with water to a height of 10,000 mm (32.8 feet) before water would begin to leak through. The higher the number, the more waterproof the fabric.

The second number is a measure of how breathable the fabric is, and is normally expressed in terms of how many grams (g) of water vapor can pass through a square meter (m2) of the fabric from the inside to the outside in a 24 hour period.
In the case of a 20k (20,000 g) fabric, this would be 20,000 grams. The larger the number, the more breathable the fabric.
Why isn’t outerwear completely waterproof?
The truth is that many outdoor/hunting products offer water resistance, but will eventually leak given enough water, time and pressure. Manufacturers define “waterproof” according to different standards, and testing is not standardized. A rubber raincoat is completely waterproof, and may be the ideal garment for standing in a downpour waiting for the bus, but if you tried to pack your elk out of the high country, you’d be wet in no time from your own perspiration. The trick is to balance protection from rain and snow on the outside with the ability to let water vapor (warm perspiration) escape from the inside.  And contrary to popular opinion, women do indeed sweat.  A lot!
How are waterproof ratings determined?
Waterproof ratings are determined by the fabric producer, with testing done either by independent laboratories or in-house. There are a number of different testing protocols in use, but most involve the equivalent of placing a 1” x 1” square tube over the fabric and determining how high (in millimeters) a column of water you can suspend over it before it starts to leak.
How breathable a garment do I need?
Well, it’s tempting to say “more is better” but the real answer depends on your level of activity. A layer of warm, moist air between your body and your shell can mean warmth as long as your underlayers don’t become saturated with moisture. If you are doing light hiking and packing and taking a lot of breaks, a breathability rating of 5,000 to 8,000 grams will probably be fine. If you do a lot of strenuous packing where you break a sweat getting to your destination, look for breathability in the 10,000 to 15,000 gram range. Backcountry hardcores and people who commonly pack and hike for thousands of vertical feet in a day should look for garments with breathability in the 20,000 plus range.
What is seam sealing and why is it important? Seam sealing, sometimes referred to as seam taping, covers the tiny holes made by the needle in the sewing process so they don’t leak, using a heat application of thin waterproof tape. Sometimes seams are bonded together using glue or heat, but typically they are first sewn then taped. Prois follows the later process. Garments can be either “fully taped” or “critically taped” – the difference is that a fully taped garment has every seam taped, while a critically taped one has tape only on high exposure areas like the neck, shoulders, and chest. Prois proudly critically tapes our garments.  Without adequate seam sealing you’ll get wet even with the best waterproof/breathable fabric.
Prois is proud to provide the leading edge in technical, performance hunting gear for women, and we knocked it out of the park with this system.

From the Ladies Room…an update from the CEO! Prois Embarks On A New Show Circuit Journey!

smallShow season.  It is indeed a gauntlet…and a gauntlet not for the faint of heart.  We have been on the show circuit since December and are pleased to have a bit of down time.

Despite our efforts to inform our customers, the media and the industry of our revised show schedule, I felt it was important to put forth a more personal statement.  Doesn’t that feel all warm and fuzzy?  Doesn’t it??

While Prois has attended the large trade shows, namely ATA and SHOT Show for the past eight years, we felt that 2016 was the perfect time to readjust our show efforts. We opted out of ATA and SHOT in favor of consumer shows such as Dallas Safari Club, Wild Sheep Show, Safari Club International and the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo.

The first conclusion people consider is that Prois is not a viable company.  Actually, nothing could be further from the truth.  We have simply opted to take our dog and pony show directly to you, our customer.  We pride ourselves on having a personal touch with our customer base and we take customer service very seriously.  We have found that our exposure, marketing and sales expand dramatically when we put our efforts to consumer based shows rather than the trade shows.  We get to meet our customers face to face and we take it as a personal challenge to outfit any woman in the Prois system that best fits their hunting needs, physical needs and pocketbook.  Our only regret is that we did not do this sooner!

In this process, we not only create customers…we create fans and friends.  It is no secret that the Prois Staff does not, well, necessarily fit the corporate mold. (Interestingly, we have been told we cannot run a business as we do…I beg to differ) We take great pride in growing the sisterhood of female hunters. We do this through offering the highest performance gear for women on the market, creating a personal experience and by being “real” people.  I personally take great pride in the amazing women that surround the company, who have named themselves the “Prois Posse”.  I aspire to be like each and every one of these wacky women!

So with that, please rest assured that Prois is not only alive and well, we are better than ever.  We still have a couple of shows in the queue, so you will see us in Anchorage at the Great Alaska Sports Show and in Louisville at the NRA National Convention.  We look forward to seeing you all there and rest assured…shenanigans shall ensue.  For if we are not shenaniganating, we are bored.  And when we are bored someone gets arrested.  Or escorted out of a casino.  Alas…those are stories for another time.

Carpe Diem, my friends!!

Venison Curry Stew

Baby it’s cold outside!
And you need soup.
Check out this awesome recipe for Venison Curry Stew!!!

4 tablespoons grape seed oil
1 venison haunch, cubed (about 5 pounds)
Salt and pepper
2 stalks lemongrass, cut into 1-inch pieces
6 cloves garlic garlic, minced
1 medium onion, diced
1 tablespoon minced ginger
3 bay leaves
2 cinnamon sticks
½ teaspoon nutmeg
1 tablespoon dried chili flakes
4 tablespoons curry
2 cans coconut milk
6 cups chicken stock
1 large butternut squash, cut into cubes
Cilantro, for garnish

In a large heavy bottomed pot, heat the oil. Season the venison cubes with salt and pepper and add them to the oil, browning them on all sides, about 5 minutes.

Add the lemongrass, garlic, onion and ginger and stir until it exudes its aroma, about 5 minutes.

Add the bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, chili flakes, and curry and stir well.

Pour in the coconut milk and chicken stock, and stir. Cover and let simmer for about 2 hours, until the venison becomes tender.
After 2 hours, add the squash and cover. Let cook until the squash is tender and the venison cubes fall apart easily.
Garnish with cilantro leaves and serve.

TexMex Stuffed Peppers

Makes about 8-10 stuffed peppers

1lb ground elk (any venison would work great)
1/2 white onion
1 cup rice
1 cup corn
1-2 cup crushed tortilla chips
1 cup black beans
1 large jar of medium chunky salsa (vary spicy factor to your preference)
TexMex seasoning to your taste
1 tablespoon of chili powder
1 tablespoon of garlic powder
1/2 – 1 cup grated cheese
8 large bell peppers
Heluva Good French Onion Dip

Remove the tops of peppers and seeds. Place peppers on baking pan and bake @ 350F for 20 mins.

In large skillet, brown ground meat with extra virgin olive oil (I bet you chuckled at that just a bit…bc the Posse isn’t known to be too mature right?!) and add TexMex, chill powder and garlic powder, taste when safe and add more if not seasoned properly. Brown onions in same skillet. Add in rice, corn, chips, beans, salsa, half of the cheese.

Stuff peppers with meat mixture, top with remaining cheese and bake @350F for 10 mins.

Top with guacamole and Heluva Good French Onion Dip and dig in!!
