A Word From the CEO- It Is Officially The Hunting Doldrums

IMG_7545By:  Kirstie Pike- CEO & Founder Prois Hunting Apparel

The doldrums.

I was recently putting away all of my gear and equipment from turkey season when it came to me.  This time of year is officially the Doldrums for hunters.

Typically, as I offload my packs and gear at the end of one particular hunting season, I am simultaneously repacking and organizing for the next hunt which is never far behind.  I am changing calls, optics and essentials.  I am switching out from shotgun to rifle to bow.  I am packing licenses, ONYXmaps and whatever else I need.

But it is the Doldrums and my pack (named Packpack) sits empty and withered in my closet. When I open the door Packpack makes me feel guilty. He just stares at me with a big, frowning zipper.  But it’s not just that.  Here are some additional signs that I am drifting about in the hunting Doldrums.

  • I log onto the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website weekly to see when the small game regulation brochure comes out.  Something has to be in season soon.
  • I drive past all of my duck hunting honey holes every day.  I find myself counting ducks, looking at the terrain and quietly letting all waterfowl know that they will be mine.
  • I slow down to count geese.  Oh man…there are geese.  Lots of geese.  They will be mine.
  • I may have logged on to see when the 2016 waterfowl dates are.  Still.  Not.  Posted.
  • I begin irrationally hoarding all wildgame in the freezer.
  • I have already purchased my turkey loads for fall.  I wasn’t a boy scout, but I like preparation.
  • My husband won’t acknowledge my repeated requests to go scouting.  Something about no access yet.  Pish.  Whatever.
  • I have rearranged the fall hunting licenses on the bulletin board by dates and alphabetical order.
  • I went to the close out sale at Sports Authority for shorts.  Didn’t buy shorts but did buy two new pairs of hunting gloves.
  • When I pull out of the garage, I promise Lola (my bow) that I will pay more attention to her soon.  It’s not her.  It’s me.
  • I sit on the deck with a glass of wine and find myself ranging objects on the ranch.
  • I can neither confirm nor deny I have investigated the weather patterns and precipitation for the last three years for the dates of my sheep hunt.  Don’t judge.
  • I may or may not have mentally rearranged the house for potential incoming mounts.
  • I have entered all posted hunting seasons in various states into my calendar.  You never know.

So there it is.  I have been cast adrift in the hunting doldrums and am impatiently waiting for the winds to change.  It seems I will continue to mouth breathe my way into fall and continue my ever increasing Doldrum activities until that time.  Until then…

Próis® Safari Gear is Currently On Sale Through the Month of June

Whether it’s a once-in-a-lifetime trip or you are going for the tenth time, the excitement of heading to Africa never dwindles. As if a trip to Africa wasn’t exciting enough, Próis® Hunting Apparel is having a sale on all Safari products through the month of June in celebration. Take a closer look at some Safari items the women’s-only apparel company has to offer.

Africa can be very hot, which means breathable, moisture wicking, and UV protecting fabrics are a must. Próis Sojourn T-shirts are made with all of these qualities and more. The Sojourn Safari short sleeve is the perfect shirt for a day in the bush. It is made of a polyester/spandex blend fabric, which makes it extremely pliable, form-fitting, and silent. When the weather calls for something warmer, try a Sojourn Safari Hoodie, which is constructed of the same soft and stretchable materials. The hood is great for added concealment during a stalk or extra blockage from the wind as temperatures decline at dawn and dusk. Próis Sojourn T-shirts come in colors Khaki and Olive and from sizes XS-XXL.

Próis’ Adventure Pants are great for any activity, but they fit especially well into the Safari lifestyle where mobility is key. Constructed of 94% nylon and 6% spandex, these pants have plenty of stretch and move seamlessly with you as you stalk. They are purposely cut with ample room through the rear, hips, and thighs for added breathability and ease of movement. Pockets along the front and back of the pants are perfect for storing gear while on the go. Additionally, they feature belt loops for your belt and ammo pouch. The Adventure Pants are available in Olive and Stone and in sizes XS-XXL.

A belt, ammo pouch, and sling are essential for hunting the Dark Continent as it’s likely you’ll spend a large portion of the day on foot. Be sure to check out Próis’ selection of leather goods which are on sale through the end of June.

Get all of these items and more at www.proishunting.com. All of the above products can easily be found on sale in the clearance section of the Próis website.

Próis was created for women, by women who refuse to settle for downsized men’s gear or upsized children’s gear. Each garment is created with the most technologically advanced fabrics available and a host of advanced features to provide comfort, silence and durability. The company’s out-of-the-box thinking has resulted in amazing designs for serious hunters that have taken the industry by storm and raised the bar for women’s outdoor apparel.

Talking Technical… Sojourn Safari Hoodie

MiaEnstromIn honor of all things SAFARI at Prois this month, we’d like to go a little more in depth about one of our favorite shirts, the Sojourn Safari Hoodie. Not only is it the perfect addition to your duffel when heading to the Dark Continent, this hoodie is also fantastic for activities such as hiking or preseason scouting trips. Let’s touch base on the properties that make the Sojourn so heavenly:

1. Polyester/spandex fabric. Known for being extremely durable, quick to dry, and moisture wicking. These fabrics are very pliable and resilient, making them perfectly capable of withstanding the strenuous activity of a hunter’s lifestyle.

2. Antimicrobial properties. These help to destroy and inhibit the growth of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi. Bacteria and fungi cause odor, and odor is down right bad for hunting… What more can we say? Screen Shot 2016-06-03 at 1.14.13 PM

3. UV Protection. A tighter weave makes it more difficult for sun to pass through the fabric, which makes the Sojourn hoodie the perfect garment for spending an extended amount of time in the outdoors.

4. The power of the hood. Let’s face it, a hood makes anyone feel more powerful. It also offers protection from sun and wind.

5. SALE SALE SALE!!! The Sojourn hoodie is… wait for it… on sale for $65.00 through the month of June, so you better strike while the iron’s hot!

A word from the CEO- The ‘Murder’ of Harambe –The Internet Mob Justice and The Degradation of Our Society.

By: Kirstie Pike, CEO and Founder Prois Hunting & Field Apparel for Women

It’s not often I use this platform to voice my opinions about politics or current events.  Yet, when the recent case of the gorilla shot at the Cincinnati Zoo to protect a toddler who fell into the animal’s enclosure caught worldwide attention, I couldn’t help it.

My first response to this incident was, “Of course the animal had to be destroyed.  It’s tragic, but the life of a small boy hung in the balance.”  I for one could not sit by and watch a child potentially die at the hands of an animal.  If it was my child, I can only imagine the fear.  I personally feel zookeepers had no other recourse.  Tranquilizing would take too long and could potentially agitate the animal further.

My second response was that it would seem the Cincinnati Zoo would need to do some serious upgrades to any enclosure into which a visitor may fall or jump.  This clearly goes without saying.

However, as the story continued to unfold I found myself horrified at the state of our society.  I was soon shocked (yet not totally surprised given the constant anti-hunting sentiment we receive) to see that people were protesting the killing of this gorilla.  While I agree, this animal was a beautiful animal who was also caught in a situation he didn’t cause…the life of a toddler was in the balance.  A rational person could not watch the video footage of the child being drug by the gorilla through water and not think that the child was in eminent danger.   However, this is what animal activists and anti-hunters do…they believe the life of an animal is more important than that of a human being.  My question…could ANY of these protesters sit by and watch their own baby in the same situation and think, “This is all fine.”?  Doubt it.  This is, unfortunately, a sad twist on society.  It is one I cannot understand and it is downright scary.  It means this, the very core of our society is rotting away and the value of life is diminished.

My mind then wandered to the parents who apparently didn’t notice the toddler missing or climbing into an area he most definitely should not have been.  Accidents happen and I am certain the child’s mother did not wake up that morning thinking, “I think I will let little Billy jump into a gorilla enclosure today.”  I can imagine neither her fear nor her guilt.  For those of us who have raised children, they are miniature Houdinis.  They just are.  Turn your back one minute and the wall is covered with crayon or one sibling has cut the others hair.  (Both true in my house)  While blame of this incident ultimately lies on the shoulders of the parents, this turned out to be a tragic incident and I am certain they are reliving this constantly.  This seems to be punishment enough in my opinion.  Apparently I was wrong.

As they days ticked by I was shocked to find out just how extensive hate runs in this society.  I started seeing comments directed to the mother of the child.  Here you go…Internet Mob Justice.

“that animal is more important than your s—–kid” “u should’ve been shot” “you’re a really bad mother and a f—ing killer”

Want to see it turn racial?  Well it did… the internet came alive with comments about how the gorilla was black, unarmed and 17.  People began citing that the gorilla was killed to spare white privilege.

Internet mob justice.  It took no time for internet users to blast their opinions, set up petitions, threaten the mother of this child and become experts on parenting.  I watched this unfold for a while but couldn’t help feeling a sense of frustration and sadness.

Protests At Cincinnati Zoo

Protests At Cincinnati Zoo

There is something deeper and more fundamental at work here.  The internet, while being a great tool, is also reshaping our society.  Anonymity makes people bold.  It takes very little to spark the internet outrage machine and what follows is a mob vengeance mentality.  According to Max Fisher, “The internet mob determines the severity of a crime based on subjective factors, such as how unlikable they find the alleged criminal to be, how likable they find the victim and the degree to which the alleged crime fits into their preconceived beliefs.  You’ll notice that most of these trace back not to the crime’s impact on society, but rather the degree to which punishing the crime will feel good for the punishers.”

Unfortunately, the punishers often are incapable of seeing varying opinions and facts that differ from their own.  This is purely irresponsible and downright dangerous.

How To Clean a Gar

by Gretchen Steele

Gar – that ugly prehistoric dinosaur of a fish – simply do not get the respect they deserve. Not only do they offer one heck of fight on rod and reel, they are a bowfishing staple fish. Sadly, their reputation as a junk trash fish combined with their armor–like hide keeps many from enjoying this abundant and great tasting fish.

I hate the term “trash fish” and the term “rough fish” is almost as bad, but I am still having a hard time getting my head wrapped around the oh-so- politically correct “underutilized native fish”. BUT The truth is that gar are a terribly under utilized native fish in many areas.

I’ve become somewhat of a gar ambassador, and when I see fellow anglers curse, kill and toss these exceptionally good eat fish aside – I just can’t stop my pushy self from interfereing and going so far as to whip out my cleaning tools and show them on the spot that cleaning and using a gar is far more easy than myth and legend would have one believe.

Cleaning a gar may seem like a daunting task, and there are multitudes of myths about the cleaning of gar and the meat – so here’s a quick how to for rendering that scary looking toothy monster ready for the table.

GretchenGar
lots of good meat on this 8lb 14 oz gar that was arrowed by my bowfishing partner in crime Amy Young of Henshaw, KY

First gather the few extra tools you will need:
1.Sharp sturdy skinning type knife
2.Tin snips
3.Thin flexible fillet knife
4. Gloves for those who wish to avoid the small cuts that sometimes result from sharp gar scales.

GretchenGar2

GretchenGar3

gretchengar4

Place the gar on you cleaning surface and begin by making a horizontal cut directly behind the head. Given the bone like quality of gar scales, insert your knife tip between the scale lines in order to make the cut much easier.

gretchengar5

gretchengar6gretchengar7

Once the horizontal cut is made, grab you tin snips and insert them just below the hide and begin making the long vertical cut down the center of the gar’s back.
When your tin snips reach the dorsal fin, make a second horizontal cut downwards along the scale line. Using a sharp and flexible fillet knife separate the “armor” from the sweet white tenderloin meat.

gretchengar8gretchengar9gretchengar10

Now you are ready to begin the filleting portion of the cleaning.

gretchengar11gretchengar12

Insert the tip of your fillet knife between the meat and the hide and begin to slowly slice the meat away from the hide on each side.
Once you have the hide free of the “loins” and meaty part of the fish, insert the fillet knife along the backbone of the fish, and simply slice the meat away from the ribs. Be aware that a gar’s rib cage is very long and extends nearly all the way to the tail.

GretchenGar13

The top loins are the good eating part of the gar. The “belly meat” is next to nothing, and full of bones, so all you are after are the two large loins.
There you have it – now that wasn’t that difficult was it? Since gar can become so very large the amount of good meat even from a single fish makes them well worth keeping and cleaning!

A NOTE OF CAUTION – NEVER EVER CONSUME THE EGGS FROM A GAR – THEY ARE EXTREMELY TOXIC TO ALL MAMMALS – INCLUDING HUMANS! Always dispose of the eggs in manner that no pets, birds, or people can get into them.

We prepare gar in a number of ways – but the all-time favorite at our house is “Poor Man’s Lobster”.
1.Cut the gar meat into bite sized chunks
2.Prepare a pot of crab boil, just as you would if you were going to boil crawfish, shrimp etc. Drop the chunks into the boil
3.Boil five minutes, remove from heat and allow to sit for an additional five minutes before removing the fish chunks.
4.Serve with melted butter, lemon juice or chill for later use.
5.You can substitute the gar cooked this way for most any recipe that calls for cooked crab meat or lobster.

Talking Technical…Why the Shoulder-EEZ Recoil Pads Are The Choice of Prois

By Kirstie Pike, CEO Prois Hunting & Field Apparel for Women

It is all things shooting at Prois Hunting & Field Apparel for Women for the month of May.  In light of that, we figured it was time to talk technical!

Prois not only carries products of our own, we sell products that we find tried and true.  We love the Shoulder EEZ recoil pads.  Here’s why…

  1.  The product comes in a rectangular sheet that can be cut to adapt to any vest or jacket pocketing system.  We find it to be the perfect match for our Competitor Shooting Vest as the Shoulder EEZ can be cut to fit one or both of the internal recoil pockets designed in the vest.
  2. It is made with Sorbothane®.   Sorbothane® is a proprietary, visco-elastic polymer. Visco-elastic means that a material exhibits properties of both liquids (viscous solutions) and solids (elastic materials). Sorbothane combines shock absorption, good memory, vibration damping characteristics and vibration isolation. In addition, Sorbothane is a very effective acoustic damper and absorber. While many materials exhibit one of these characteristics, Sorbothane combines all of them in a stable material with long fatigue life.
  3. KickEEZ are proundly manufactured in the U.S.A- which we love.

While we have tried many recoil pads, we come back to the Shoulder EEZ product as it wears well and holds up to the abuse it takes at the range.  The supreme product combined with its ease of use makes it the best in our opinion.

You can purchase Shoulder EEZ pads at  http://www.proishunting.com/shop/accessories-hats/shoulder-eez-recoil-pad/!  And did we mention they are on sale for $25 for the month of May?

Turkey Hunting Gear List

It’s no secret hunters have lot’s of gadgets. It’s often very overwhelming preparing for a hunt and trying to decide what to bring. Each hunt, whether it be for turkey, deer, elk, or ducks, requires a slightly different set of gear. With that said, we put together a turkey hunting gear list, which will hopefully make organizing a bit easier when you prepare for your turkey hunt.

Decoy(s)

TarraStoddardDecoy (1)This is a rather large item, therefore it shouldn’t be a tough one to remember. Although, there have been plenty of instances where an obvious item like a decoy gets overlooked at the house before heading out. Unless you are planning a spot and stalk mission, this is a very important piece of equipment when going turkey hunting. If you don’t prefer to load your truck the night before, set all your equipment by the front door. This will ensure you don’t forget it.

Range Finders

DSC_0024Especially if you prefer to hunt with a bow, range finders are something you really can’t do without. A good pair of rangefinding binoculars, such as the Swarovski EL Rangefinding Binoculars, will cut down on the weight of your pack and take up less room than having to carry both optics.

Multi-ToolScreen Shot 2016-04-27 at 2.57.49 PM

A reliable Multitool should make the list no matter what type of hunt you are going on. You never know when you might need it! My personal favorite is the SOG Power Assist Multi-Tool, which can be found here.

Jacket

JeanEllenMistyLou

Mother Nature can be very unpredictable in the springtime. Don’t overlook the importance of a quality jacket in case the weather turns on you. The Prois Pro-Edition Jacket is made with compressed fabric and is the perfect addition to your day pack.

NancyProisCardTurkey Call

No matter what type of call you prefer, don’t leave home without it. Unless you’re a seasoned mouth caller, you’ll be in a serious bind if you get to the woods and realize you have no way of calling birds to your decoy!

Survival/First Aid Kit

A survival kit is commonly overlooked by hunters, but when done right, it won’t add a ton of weight to your pack. A Ziplock bag with essential survival and first aid gear will do just fine. Some items to include are:

Braided nylon rope
Matches
Fire Starter
Toilet paper
Whistle
Garbage Bags
Bright orange surveyor’s tape
Sterile pads
Sterile Gauze
Neosporin
Bandaids
Aspirin
First Aid Tape

Screen Shot 2016-04-27 at 5.00.19 PMGPS

This can be a lifesaver if you have a long walk to and from your truck. If you are in an area with reliable cell service, a smartphone will do just fine. For an affordable GPS, try the Garmin eTrex 10.

Day Pack

You will have a much Screen Shot 2016-04-27 at 2.37.06 PMeasier time keeping your gear organized if you have a reliable day pack. We recommend the Badlands Kali Day Pack, which is made specifically for women.

We hope this list helps you prepare for your upcoming turkey hunting endeavors. Good luck and happy hunting from all of us at Prois Hunting Apparel!
